Steel, 6 x 13 x 21 meters, Rectorat de Rouen, Rouen, 1993

In his comments about his compositions, Edgar Varese often refers to geometry. He speaks of the movement of sonorous planes and masses varying in intensity and density: " Once these sounds collide, the resulting phenomena are penetration and repulsion". György Ligeti described " webs constructed on a restricted number of sounds", allowing the ear to perceive a unity, and suggesting the idea of static sonorous surface. The concept of sonorous surfaces was taken up again for trellis constructions forming what we might call pavilions a term which, (in French), indicates not only a structure, but also the bell of a musical instrument.
