At the beginning of the nineteenth century, the freshly painted toiles de Jouy were spread out to dry in the surroundings fields. A painting bu Jean-Baptiste Huet, shows how the landscape created by the drying strips of fabric bore a resemblance to an ensemble of strips where peasants cultivate their crops. That was the inspiration for the terrace project. An off center axis between the acces of the terrace and the entrance to the Museum was flanked by a series of flower boxes. This descentering and the arrangement of the flowers boxes focus on a purely horizontal impression: a multi-colored carpet" of sorts, leading up to the museum.
